Cook Street come desperately close to semi finals in Salt Spring Challenge Cup

With the VISL season over, there is no organized league soccer until September – meaning the chance to enjoy the beautiful Vancouver Island Summer. There are, however, plenty of other chances to play football around Greater Victoria, including in Canada’s biggest 7-a-side league and in one-off events like the annual Salt Spring Challenge Cup.

Cook Street United entered a team into the tournament this May, led by Soul player Toni Faleh and comprised of Peacocks from across both United (d3) and Soul (d4).

The boys performed well over a gloriously sunny long May weekend, with 20 players playing across four matches over two days. An incredibly tight opening game against VISL D3 champions Castaways FC ended with a last minute injury time goal, finishing as a crushing 2-1 win for Castaways. This early disappointment was followed by another close match, this time against Vancouver-based West Hounds. The largely uneventful 0-0 was punctuated by a world class save from Peacocks keeper Riccardo Tavazzani, earning Cook Street their first point and him the man of the match award.

With momentum behind them, the next game was a devastating 4-1 victory over Steelheads, a team formed by Cowichan – one of the VISL strongest teams in division 4. This win set up a huge final match against Gorge, meaning the winner would successfully go on to reach the knockout stage of the tournament. Despite an onslaught of chances, Cook Street were unable to finish them and finished the game at 1-1, with Gorge holding on for the point they needed to reach the semi finals.

More importantly than the results, of course, was the vibes. In true Cook Street fashion, those that made the ferry trip to Salt Spring Island had a memorable, fun weekend with their friends and team mates. We’ll be back next year and keep an eye out for us throughout the Summer. Let us know if you’d like to join the squad for next season and read about what life is like as a Peacock here.
